President’s Message
Congratulations to the 2024 State Champions. What an outstanding achievement! The Girls winners were Div. I – Olmsted Falls, Div. II – Cincinnati Purcell Marian, Div. III – Columbus Africentric, and Div. IV – Fort Loramie. The Boys winners were Div. I – Cleveland St. Ignatius, Div. II – Kettering Archbishop Alter, Div. III – Cleveland Heights Lutheran East, and Div. IV – Richmond Heights. Additionally, congratulations to the head coaches of these teams on winning a state championship.

It was great to see the outstanding support these student-athletes received from their communities throughout. boys and girls championship weekends. A thank you to The University of Dayton and the staff for being hospitable hosts, the arena had a great atmosphere for student-athletes to compete in during both weekends.

Prior to the Boys State Tournament, we held our annual meetings to select our post-season awards, scholarships and academic awards on Thursday, March 21st at The University of Dayton Arena. Thanks to all the Directors across the state of Ohio for taking time to meet to select various award winners from the OHSBCA.

We would like to especially congratulate 2024 Paul Walker Award winner Andy Booth from Wadsworth High School for being named the recipient of this prestigious award. Andy has made major contributions over the years coaching kids, mentoring of coaches,
and to the OHSBCA.

On Friday, April 26th the OHSBCA North-South All-Star games were held at Olentangy Liberty High School. Special thanks to Girls North-South Director Adam Priefer and Boys North-South Director Greg Nossaman. The following evening, Saturday, April 27th we honored the 2024 hall of fame class which included: Gregg Collins of Lexington \/ Mansfield Senior, Pam Davis of Archbishop Hoban, Doug Hale of
Oak Hill, Carl Kremer of Archbishop Moeller and Dennis Schrock of Chippewa. I would like to specifically thank Paul Wayne who chaired the great event. \u201cWayno\u201d has done a wonderful job with the great evening for many years. What an outstanding weekend for our association and basketball in the state of Ohio!

As I begin my third and final year as President of the OHSBCA, I\u2019m excited to see what this year brings. Two additions to the 2024-2025 Ohio High School Basketball season should bring a new level of excitement to basketball in Ohio. First, the OHSAA adding three classifications, going from 4 to 7 Divisions, in the 2024-2025 high school basketball tournament. Secondly, the OHSBCA hosting a basketball event that will utilize the shot clock. The OHSBCA Shot Clock Shootout at The Canton Memorial Fieldhouse December 27th – 29th will be the first basketball games to utilize a shot clock during a high school basketball game in Ohio High School Basketball history.

Finally, I want to encourage all Ohio basketball coaches to promote the skills that will stay with the student-athlete after high school. Post-secondary skills like working with others, problem solving, composure during adversity, being early to practice\/games\/meetings etc… Good luck and good health during the 2024-2025 season.

RPI Rating System
The Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association has worked with Max Preps on the RPI Formula that will be used for the 2024-2025 basketball season. Through feedback from coaches and district directors, this year the formula will be composed of three components – Percentages for RPI, Points of Classifications, and Out of State Points.

First component is the Percentages for the RPI. The Percentages for RPI is based on WP (Winning Percentage), OWP (Opponents Winning Percentage), and OOWP (Opponents Opponents Winning Percentage). The formula will be 40%WP x 40%OWP x 20% OOWP.

The second component will be Points of Classification. Division 1 – 2 points, Division 2 – 1.85 points, Division 3 – 1.70, Division 4 – 1.55, Division 5 – 1.40, Division 6, 1.25, and Division 7 – 1.10.

The third compenent is based on out-state opponents. The point value of 1.55 points will be awarded.

The OHSBCA and coaches will be monitoring the effects of these changes to the rating system and will re-evaluate at the end of the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OHSBCA Awards Changes
The Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association (OHSBCA) has introduced several changes in response to the expansion to seven divisions for boys\u2019 and girls\u2019 basketball, impacting both awards and recognitions. Specifically, the Academic All-Ohio Award criteria have been updated. Now, one Academic All-Ohio team will be a single group, recognizing 25 student-athletes across all divisions.

Three Assistant Coach of the Year Award will be selected with one Assistant Coach from a pool of candidates in Division 1, 2, and 3, one Assistant Coach from a pool of candidates in Division 4 and 5, and one Assistant Coach from a pool of candidates in Division 6 and 7.

The Coach of the Year Award and the Player of the Year Award will be expanded to all seven divisions, ensuring that each division has its own award winners.

These changes aim to streamline the recognition process while celebrating excellence across all levels in Ohio high school basketball.


OHSAA MEMBERS SCHOOL ENROLLMENT FOR 2024-2025
As announced last February, girls and boys basketball will expand to seven divisions next season, with the largest 64 schools placed in Division I, the next 64 largest schools placed in Division II, and the remaining schools divided as equally as possible into the other divisions.

Earlier this spring, the OHSAA received base enrollment data, comprised of students in grades 9, 10 and 11 as of October 2023, from the Ohio Department of Education to use for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years. During the winter season, girls and boys basketball utilizes competitive balance data from the previous season to create a new adjusted enrollment count. MIDWEST LIVE 2024 RECAP
<\/strong>The OHSBCA finished the third Annual Boys Midwest Live Event this past June. With the change in the NCAA recruiting calendar, the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association and the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan join forces to hold a team event during the live recruiting period.

Midwest Live was a NFHS certified scholastic recruiting event held that was held June 28th-30th at the Cedar Point Sports Center in Sandusky, Ohio. The teams played 4 games in a two-day format (Friday\/Saturday or Saturday\/Sunday).

There were 130 High Schools from Ohio (88 Schools), Michigan (38 Schools), Indiana (1 Schools), Pennsylvania (1 School) and West Virginia (2 Schools) that participated in the two-day event. There was a total of 214 college coaches from 92 schools represented at the showcase.

The purpose of this event was to showcase some of the best underclassmen talent the States of Ohio and Michigan have to offer. This was a college exposure event for student-athletes who have a goal of playing basketball at the next level and earning a scholarship. This event was held during the prime NCAA evaluation period for college recruiters.

The OHSBCA also held the 2nd Annual Girls Midwest Live Event a two weeks prior to the Boys (June 14th & 15th) at the Cedar Point Sports Center. Each team played two games per day for a total of four games.

There were 83 Teams from Ohio that competed in the two-day event. There was a total of 59 college coaches from 39 schools represented at the showcase.

Plans for the 2025 Midwest Live Event are in the works. Dates and format will be determined as the College Recruiting Calendar gets approved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hooplines
<\/strong>During the Executive Summer Meeting, the officers decided to modernize the communication with its members by sending more frequent updates.

Monthly newsletters from September through April will be published and sent to all active members with a valid email address. The information will be short and concide to keep you updated on the latest happening of Ohio basketball.

Hooplines will be published twice a year. The Year in Review will be released in January which contains the rich history of the OHSBCA. The Spring Edition will be issued in May, highlighting all of the award winners that the OHSBCA honors for the past basketball season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
