President’s Message
Congratulations to the 2023 State Champions. What an outstanding achievement! The Girls winners were: D1 Cincinnati Princeton, D2 Cincinnati Purcell Marian, D3 Columbus Africentric, and D4 Tri-Village. The Boys winners were: D1 Archbishop Hoban, D2 Akron Buchtel, D3 Lutheran East, and D4 Richmond Heights. The University of Dayton was a great atmosphere for student-athletes to compete in both weekends, and it was great to have fans back in the arena cheering on their teams across the state. Congratulations to all the coaches across the state for milestones this past season.

Prior to the Boys State Tournament, we held our annual meetings to select our post-season awards, scholarships and academic awards on Thursday, March 16th at The University of Dayton Arena. Thanks to all the Directors and Girls District Directors across the state of Ohio for taking time to meet to select various award winners from the OHSBCA. We would like to especially congratulate 2023 Paul Walker Award winner Dennis Tucci from Malvern High School being named the recipient of this prestigious award. Dennis has made major contributions over the years coaching kids, mentoring of coaches, and the OHSCBA.

On Friday, April 28th the OHSBCA North\/South All-Star games were held at Olentangy Liberty High School. This year both the girls and boys North-South All-Star games were held in the same location – Olentangy Liberty High School. Special thanks to Girls North-South Director Adam Priefer and Boys North-South Director Greg Nossaman. The following evening, Saturday, April 29th we honored the 2023 Hall of Fame class which included: Marty Hill (Windham); Bob Krizancic (Mentor); Joe Staley (Chaminade-Julienne); Ed Zink (Beavercreek); The banquet was held at the Columbus Marriott Inn on Olentangy River Road. I would like to specifically thank Paul Wayne who chaired the great event. \u201cWayno\u201d has done a wonderful job with the great evening for many years. What an outstanding weekend for our association and basketball in the state of Ohio!

As I begin my second year as your President, I\u2019m excited to welcome two major changes to Ohio High School Basketball. First, the utilization of MaxPreps ratings system to seed teams for the OHSAA boys\/girls basketball tournaments. This should ultimately enhance regular season scheduling and the tournament seeding process. Secondly, the NFHS rule change to allow two free throws on the fifth team foul in each quarter. This rule change should cut back on the amount of physical play while also introducing a new element of coaching strategy.

Finally, the first year in the role of OHSBCA President has been a blessing. As coaches we have the opportunity to develop special relationships while molding young men and women to be valuable contributors to our schools, families and communities. I hope for your decisions this season to be made with all student-athletes in mind.

OHSAA MEMBERS SCHOOL ENROLLMENT FOR 2023-2024
New divisional assignments for the 2023-24 basketball season were released by the Ohio High School Athletic Association on June 8, 2023. For the fifth time, Competitive Balance roster data was used in determining divisional assignments in basketball. This was the only OHSAA winter sport affected by the Competitive Balance regulation that OHSAA member schools adopted by referendum vote in 2014.

Divisional assignments are based on gender-specific enrollment numbers provided to the OHSAA by the Ohio Department of Education. Enrollment figures are then modified in basketball based on the Competitive Balance roster data submitted by each school. The formula is 2023 Male Enrollment + 2023 Competitive Balance Enrollment determines the Gender Specific Basketball Enrollment.

MIDWEST LIVE 2023 RECAP
<\/strong>The OHSBCA finished the 2nd Annual Boys Midwest Live Event this past June. With the change in the NCAA recruiting calendar, the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association and the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan join forces to hold a team event during the live recruiting period.

Midwest Live was a NFHS certified scholastic recruiting event held that was held June 23rd-25th at the Cedar Point Sports Center in Sandusky, Ohio. The teams played 4 games in a two-day format (Friday\/Saturday or Saturday\/Sunday).

There were 121 High Schools from Ohio (76 Schools), Michigan (39 Schools), Kentucky (4 Schools), and West Virginia (2 Schools) that participated in the two-day event. There was a total of 155 college coaches from 92 schools represented at the showcase.

The purpose of this event was to showcase some of the best underclassmen talent the States of Ohio and Michigan have to offer. This was a college exposure event for student-athletes who have a goal of playing basketball at the next level and earning a scholarship. This event was held during the prime NCAA evaluation period for college recruiters.

The OHSBCA also held the Inaugral Girls Midwest Live Event a week prior to the Boys (June 16th & 17th) at the Cedar Point Sports Center. Each team played two games per day for a total of four games.

There were 64 Teams from Ohio (63 Schools) and Michigan (1 School) that competed in the two-day event. There was a total of 53 college coaches from 40 schools represented at the showcase.

Plans for the 2024 Midwest Live Event are in the works. Dates and format will be determined as the College Recruiting Calendar gets approved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hooplines
<\/strong>During the Executive Summer Meeting, the officers decided to modernize the communication with it members by sending more frequent updates.

Monthly newsletters from September through April will be published and sent to all active members with a valid email address. The information will be short and concide to keep you updated on the latest happening of Ohio basketball.

Hooplines will be published twice a year. The Year in Review will be released in January which contains the rich history of the OHSBCA. The Spring Edition will be issued in May, highlighting all of the award winners that the OHSBCA honors for the past basketball season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Assistant Coaches Should Join the OHSBCA
<\/strong>Each year, we in the association are asked, \u201cWhat are the benefits for registering my assistant coaches in the OHSBCA?\u201d The reasons for an assistant coach to join our coaches association are as follows:

1. Can have a vote for the North-South All-Star Player that is nominated, either the assistant can vote for this or have his\/her head coach vote for the player. Sometimes, good players lose out to another good player and that nominee could be an alternate to the game, or the selection committee could place the runner-up in the game.
2. Receive the Century Awards for their total wins \u2013 all wins below the varsity level can count towards the total for an assistant coach receiving this award.
3. Receive the Bob Arnzen Award for 20 consecutive years at one school.
4. Receive Assistant Coach of the Year Award
5. Receive the NHSBCA Playbook App. This Playbook App gives every coach that is a member the option of draw, storing and showing plays on any electric device (iphone, ipad, laptop, etc.).
6. Receive the NHSBCA Resource App. This Resource App contains over 100 animated plays and drills, coaching clinic videos, podcast series and a variety of articles.
7. Son or Daughter is eligible for one of the 15 Coaches Scholarships that is awarded each year. The scholarship is worth $1,000 (the $20 you would pay for your annual membership it would take you 50 years of joining to break even on your expense).

The MOST IMPORTANT REASON: By joining each year, it will give assistants years as being a member in the association and that is important in receiving many of the honors in coaching. In a close vote for honors, a coach\u2019s years as a member of the OHSBCA is usually the final deciding factor in who is honored. Same goes for the coaches scholarship. A coach who joined for a number of years, has a better chance for their son\/daughter receiving the scholarship money as opposed to a coach who has joined just a few years.

Those are the REASONS WHY ASSISTANTS SHOULD JOIN THE OHSBCA. Head Coaches, please make sure your Assistants join!

Schools with the most Coaches that Joined the OHSBCA<\/strong>
The OHSBCA had 3,691 coaches joined the Association last year. This year will have a tie for Boys Coach Staffing. Congratulations to Massillon Jackson Boys Staff and Coach Tim Debevec and Kenton Boys Staff and Coach Ryan Miller. The leader on the Girls side with 12 coaches was Loudonville Girls Staff and Coach Tyler Bates.

These schools joined their entire Varsity staff, JV staff, Freshmen staff and Junior High staff. Some team even joined their scorekeepers, timers and video personal. The teams with the most coaches joined are listed to the left for last year\u2019s membership.

As we enter into a new year, let\u2019s try to break our record of 4,099 by joining more coaches to our Association. Please join your Varsity staff, JV staff, Freshman staff and Junior High staff. WE WOULD LIKE TO SURPASS THE 4,100 MARK THIS YEAR!! The only way we can accomplish this is to get every in your program to join.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
