ALLEN SOUDER OF FORT RECOVERY<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Coach Souder was born in Garrett, Indiana and graduated from Garrett High School in 1947. He graduated from Ball State University in 1957. Allen received his Master\u2019s degree, also from Ball State in 1959.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allen began coaching at Portland, Indiana where he coached basketball, football and track at the Junior High School from 1957-1960. Then he spent three years at Ridgeville High School in Indiana where he also coached football, basketball and track and taught Industrial Arts. Allen then moved to Fort Recovery High School where he had very successful teams. His teams were Mercer County League Champs in 1967, \u201869, \u201871, \u201873, and \u201878. They were sectional Champs in \u201867, \u201869, \u201970, \u201871, \u201872, \u201873 and \u201884. Fort Recovery won the district in 1969 and 1971 and was the regional champion those two years. The 1969 team was a State Semi-finalist. The 1971 team was the State Champion (26-2). He accumulated 308 victories during his career in basketball. Fort Recovery had an undefeated regular season in 1972-73 going 20-0 and 23-1 overall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leaving Fort Recovery, Coach Souder moved to Paulding High School where he coached basketball for 10 years, taught Health and Physical Education and coached golf and tennis. Allen was inducted into the Garrett High School Hall of Fame and the Fort Recovery Hall of Fame in 2006.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coach Souder credited his success to good talent on his teams and the fact that they worked hard. He had dedicated assistants and always stressed teamwork among staff and players. Allen emphasized team play and that the word team did not contain an “I”. Allen said, “It was a joy to coach players many of whom became Doctors, bankers and good citizens in their communities”. Allen was the Ohio High School Associated Press Coach of the Year in 1967.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to being a head basketball coach for 28 years Coach Souder was head golf coach for 19 years, baseball for 16 years, track for seven years and cross country coach for six years. Allen was a member of the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association for 25 years. He was an active member of the District 8 Coaches Association and served as president in 1971.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allen and his wife Joyce, raised four children. They were: Susan (Mike Midler) sons, Zachary, Josh and Matt; Tom (Diane) children, Justin and Abby; Ron; Ellen (Charles) Deardorff and daughters, Grace and Danielle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Tom was an assistant coach at Ohio State University, Allen and his wife attended 94 basketball games over those four years. That was during the Jimmy Jackson era at Ohio State. The family is a member of the United Methodist Church where Allen served as trustee and usher for many years<\/p>\n\n\n\n
