Jim Rucki<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Jim Rucki was born in Steubenville, Ohio. His parents, the late Frank and Sylvia Rucki raised him along with his four older siblings (Susan, John, Rob, and Mary Beth) in nearby Amsterdam, Ohio.  He graduated from Springfield Local High School in Bergholz, Ohio, in 1980 where he played basketball for coach Rick Baldwin. He went on to attend and play baseball at Muskingum College.  In 1984, he graduated with a degree in History.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rucki began his coaching career in 1984 in Rocky River, Ohio coaching football, basketball, and baseball at various levels. In 1987, he was named Rocky River\u2019s Head Baseball Coach and in 1989, Head Boys\u2019 Basketball Coach. As Head Basketball Coach, Rucki inherited a program that had had nine consecutive losing seasons and averaged less than seven wins per season over the previous 20 years.\u00a0 The Pirates went 13-10 in his first season and 21-3 in his second. In his ten seasons at \u201cRiver\u201d the Pirates had nine winning seasons, two league championships including their first in 30 years, won their first two District Championships, and averaged 16 wins per season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rucki family moved to Findlay, in Hancock County, in the Fall of 1999 when Jim was hired as the Head Basketball Coach at Findlay High School. He continued at Findlay for 25 years during which time the Trojans never had a losing season. In 2007, the Trojans won their first District Championship since 1981, and advanced to the Elite 8, the school\u2019s longest basketball tournament run since 1948. During his tenure at Findlay, the Trojans won two District championships and eight conference championships, in four different conferences. He retired after the 2024 season with a career record of 545-258.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his basketball coaching career,\u00a0Rucki was awarded District Coach of the Year, (NE or NW Ohio) a total of eight times along with A.P. State Coach of the year in 1998, and OHSBCA State Coach of the Year in 2024.\u00a0Coach Rucki\u2019s coaching philosophy emphasized fundamentals, paying attention to detail, and players being great teammates. He prioritized he and his staff being great role models for their players and feels blessed by and eternally grateful for the many great assistants that have coached alongside him during his career. Special among his staff was his dedicated and loyal assistant Ray Elbin who was by his side for all 25 years at Findlay. In addition to all being great educators, fathers, and mentors, seven of Rucki\u2019s assistants went on to become head basketball coaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coach Rucki also recognizes that he has had terrific players, great young men, to work with throughout his career. During his time at Findlay, eleven of Coach Rucki\u2019s players earned Academic All-Ohio honors. This is the third most of any boys\u2019 or girls\u2019 program in the state during that time.  He is very proud of the men that all his players have become. Jim is aware that any honors that he has received during his career are most definitely team and program honors.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jim was a head baseball coach at Rocky River and later Liberty-Benton for a total of 20 years, winning over 300 games.\u00a0 His 1998 and 1999 Rocky River baseball teams were back-back state runners-up. As a History teacher, Jim spent the majority of his career teaching Advanced Placement U.S. History. \u00a0In 2005, he published a book on the first 100 seasons of Findlay Trojans basketball. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jim has been married for 40 years to his college sweetheart, the former Eileen Mahoney, a great supporter and undoubtedly the Pirates\u2019 and Trojans\u2019 biggest fan. Together they have four adult children; Emily, a teacher in Charlotte, N.C., Molly, an attorney in Washington D.C., Robbie (Laura) Video Coordinator for the Ohio State Men\u2019s Basketball program, and Maggie a singer\/performer in Virginia.  Jim and Eileen are the proud grandparents of 2 year old Charlotte. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
